There are aspects to my personality that are unique, things that make me…me. I love this about myself, that my likes and dislikes, my relationships and personality have formed the person I have become. I, for the most part, have grown to love who I am. There are days, however, when one of those unique qualities pops up at full force. At times like this I often take a step back and say to myself ‘this is it, I’ve crossed the line from quirky into crazy’. Shortly after having these thoughts I usually realize that we are all crazy in one form or another. There is no such thing as ‘normal’. There are all of these qualities that make up a person and we don’t share them all but we often share one or too. So we are not all identical but there are similar qualitys that connect us to each other.
I talk to myself. A lot. It helps me think and process my thoughts. Sometimes it makes me feel like I am going crazy. I know that I am not alone in this, many people talk to themselves. Take my mother for example. I recently found an article that reassured me that when I am talking to myself I am not going crazy, it’s just a unique part of my personality. Well 21 days have come and gone and phase one is over. I have exercised regularly only taking a day off once or twice a week so as not to over do it. I am feeling great and motivated for phase two.
I used to mediate. I actually took a meditation class once and loved it. I was very relaxing and helped with my anxiety. I can’t even remember the last time I meditated, not good.
I have a book called Everyday Meditation: 100 Meditations for Health, Stress Relief, and Everyday Joy by Tobin Blake. I really enjoyed the book, it helped you get started and taught you techniques. Plus it does a little variation each day which I found helped build my interest.
So phase two of my mental spring cleaning is to meditate everyday. I have the book to help me stay focused on my goal and I also plan on keeping a meditation journal to keep track of my progress and to document my sessions.
Here is to the the first 21 days of a life long habit.
Spring is in the air. I am cleaning out the dust in the house and the cobwebs in my head. There are times when I start to many big projects at once and cannot keep up with them to get anything finished. I have prioritized my goals and am now starting phase one.
First I am going to start blogging again since it somehow got away from me and I have really been missing it. I am also going to start exercising regularly. I have packed on the pounds during the winter blues ands it’s time to shape up. I attempted to go for a nice long walk the other day but my plans were foiled when my ancient running shoes started hurting my feet.
I made it around the block and had to come back. So I went on a little shopping trip….
… now with my fancy new running shoes I am all set.
I learnt once that if you do something 21 times it becomes a habit. Day one is done, I now have 20 more days of walking to go before I move on to phase 2.
As I was enjoying a walk after work today I noticed a few things. I observed three birds while out and all of them were walking. The first thought I had was why are you walking when you can fly, silly bird. But even birds need to go for a stroll now and then. It doesn’t take long and there are so many benefits to walking. Walking will improve your health and can help clear your mind, I get some of my best ideas while walking. I know it is hard to find time but you need to make time. Time will not wait for you to be ready and then present a big flashing sign that says ‘go walking now’, sorry but things don’t work like that. Bring a friend to keep each other motivated each day. Never skip walking two days in a row, it’s harder to keep going. Keep a record or schedule to help get you started and stay walking. We all need to get out for a walk now and again. Remember, a little walk goes a long way.
I love bacon. While I am aware it is not the healthiest thing it is not the worst thing you could eat either. Therefore I still eat bacon for the undeniable fact it is delicious. I have recently discovered some useful knowledge of bacon. It is best to eat bacon for breakfast as it can keep you awake. So eating it at night can be a bad idea if you plan to sleep. Bacon contains Tyramine which stimulates the release of norepinephrine. Norepinephrine is a stimulant that keeps you vigilant (awake and aware), increases your heart rate, and is, along with epinephrine, responsible for the fight-or-flight response. So if you plan on having bacon, try having it earlier in the day rather than later. If you want to stay on the healthier side of things but still enjoy the delicious taste of bacon change your cooking method. Growing up we cooked bacon in a frying pan and by the time all the bacon was cooked the frying pan was filled with bacon grease. Now I cook bacon in the oven. Place a piece of parchment paper on a pan and place the strips of bacon on top. Bake at 350′ for approximately 30 minutes depending on how you like it done. Delicious bacon with a little less grease.
Another two months have past and my happiness project is still in full swing. What I had planned for the months of March and April ended up changing. I wanted to continue my theme of becoming healthier especially through exercise and better organization. Things started out on the right track then took a turn into a new topic, work. Work became my topic for the last two months. I was unhappy at my job which was causing me stress and effecting my happiness. I made the decision to look for a new job, something more suited to my beliefs and philosophy on teaching. I found it. It took a bit of time and effort but I am now at a new job that so far seems to be working better for me. I also decided to take a passion of mine and expand it further into a career, photography. Smile Me Photography is the name of my new business. I have been working more with my camera and photographs, selling my art at shows and online and I absolutely love it. So while March and April did not go as planned they made me realize an area of my life I wanted to work on to become happier in. For the next two months, May and June, I plan to go back to my topic of health. I plan to exercise regularly, meditate daily, and continue working on the little things…like making the bed. All it takes is enough motivation to want to change. Think of the things you want to be happier with and do what needs to be done to change it.

I love naps. They are amazing. My apologies to my mother if I ever refused a nap as a child. Now as a grown up I have become very aware of how precious those naps were. I have also learnt of something that is even better than a nap. It’s crazy I know, how can anything be better than a nap. Well I will let you in on the secret….. It’s called meditation.
